தமிழன்...அரசியல்வாதி...கவிஞன்

1. தமிழ் வாழ்க
என்றால்
அவனுக்கு புரிவதில்லை
லாங்லிவ் டமில்
என்றால்
அவனுக்கு புரிகிறது
ஏனெனில்
அவன் ஒரு தமிழன்.

2. தமிழ்
கட்டாய பயிற்சி மொழிக்காக
ஆங்கிலப் பள்ளியில்
அரசியல் வாதி
ஆர்ப்பாட்டம்
வகுப்பறையிலிருந்து
வெளியே தந்தையை
பார்த்தான் மகன்.

3. வாழும்போது
வறியவன் நீ
தனிமனிதன் உனக்கு
உணவில்லை தரணியில்
இறந்தபின் உன்
புகழ்ப் பாடப்படும்
நினைவில்லம் கட்டப்பட்டும்
உன் ஜாதகம் அப்படி
ஏனெனில்..நீ
ஒரு தமிழ்க்கவிஞன்

First stanza tries to define an average Tamilian of today. We have not gone that far. I talked in English in my hometown; people got annoyed.

Such annoying behaviour of speaking English in public with fellow Tamilians is largely confined to city-bred spoilt brats. They are not to blame at all. English has swept not only Tamil but the other vernaculars in India also.

Walk down Hazratganj in Lucknow.
, the broadway of that city. You cant see sign boards in Hindi. Look at the youth hanging around there. They all sport western culture. Delhi is the capital of India and Hindi is her offical as well as National language. All in paper. Foreigners who dont know Hindi, face no difficulty in conversations; or in signboards etc. English rules everywhere. Who are hypocrites? Only politicians? Arent you and me, and all of us?

Your attempt to straighjacket an avarage Tamil should rather be an attempt to straightjacket an avareage Indian today. That would have been more honest! Honesty is the best policy for all of us! Not for one group only!!

Second stanza talks about a politician who clamours for Tamil as a compulsory medium of education, but sends his son to an English medium school. So, according to you, he is being a hypocrite and therefore, should shut up. I agree. Then, why dont you pick up all of us who dont even make the noise, but simply feels ashamed to send our children to English medium. You would say, we are honest. Face saving words!

Listen, Tamil will be largely preferred if only it is a market oriented language. It is not. That place has gone to English. Parents - politicians are also parents - want their children not to be left behind in the race to get on in life, the commerial successe. It is enough for Tamil to be taught compulsorily as a language in schools. That would make you read Thirukkural in your leisure hours. What more do you want?

In your second stanza, it is nowhere said, neither implied that the English medium school, in front of which the hypocritical political stages a protest, does not teach Tamil as a part I or part II language. In all schools in TN, whichever medium it is, Tamil is taught as a language. No more than that. If the poltician sends his son to an English medium school where Tamil is not taught as a second language, then he is guilty of hypocricy. Your second stanze does not say that!

Third stanza is pure juvenile. A poet does not live in statues or memorials. He is celebrated even after his death by people who read his poems and enjoy reading them, talking about them etc. If a memorial is constructed, it is politics.

Where is the memorial for Avvaiyaar? Nowhere. No one knows where she was born; when she was born and how she lived. But we all enjoy reading her, get benefited by her wisdom and pass it to the next generation. Avvai lives on for ever. How comes that, Kanchana?

The memorial that is built today for any poet, is a matter of bricks and stones. It will crumble one day. The poet will live on, on the strenght or merits of his ouvre. Please remember that!

அவர்கள் எழுத்துக்கள் வாழ்கின்றன..உண்மைதான்..ஆனால் அவன் உயிருடன்
இருக்கும்போதும் அவனை வசதியாக வாழ வையுங்கள்..என்றால் தவறா.
வலம்புரி ஜான் பற்றி கேள்விபட்டிருப்பீர்களே..அவர் கடைசி காலத்தில்
நீரிழிவு நோயால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு ..வறுமையில் வாடி மறைந்தாரே..
அது தெரியுமா உங்களுக்கு.
நாணயத்தின் ஒரு பக்கத்தை மட்டுமே பார்க்காதீர்கள்..மறு பக்கத்தையும் பாருங்கள்

Of all persons, you have zeroed on Valampuri John for your example of a Tamil scholar or poet who was not honored during his lifetime. It shows your appreciation of Tamil language and literature is shallow.

You could have cited any other scholar or a man of letters in Tamil for your example. Like Kambadaasan who was found dead in the early morning in Mount Road - a great poet who blazed a trail in film songs too. He died of TB, unsung and unhonored and unwept. Even today, the present generation is unaware of his achievements. What about you? Have you heard about him?

Like him, so many other examples can be cited. But you, in your ignorance, fawned on Valampuri John. A sick joke of the day for me that comes from you!

I know him. He was from Uvari, a tiny coastal village in Nellai district - a 45' road travel from Nagarkoil. From a community of fishermen. Graduated from St Xaviers' College, Palaymcottai (BA English Language and Literature) and was ordained to be a priest; but gave up that as he was really material-minded man, not spiritual-minded. He went to Loyola for MA in English; then, to Law College, Madras. During his time, there was only one Law College for the whole State. There, he took to students politics as he came to realise correctly that he had got the gift of the gab with which it was easy to fool the general public. Became MA.BL. but did not practise law. Joined the popular party of the day: DMK. His personal character is nothing to speak about. A charlton who turned his colour as occasion demanded. Switched to AIADMK when it was launched; with MGR enjoying many posts; got an MP seat continuously. When MGR died, joined Janaki, then, Jeyalalitha. Ran a magazine called Thai. Later on, Jeyalalitha understood his true colors and booted him out.

With a shallow knowledge of everything and with a gift of the gab, he appeared in TV programmes. He talked about a lot of supersttitions joining the brigade of Dravidian parties, in his studen and early days in politics; but, during his last days, propogated (for money) the superstition of gems and stones! All for what? For money! On a stage where a famous woman Tamil writer was sitting. She is a widow, lost her husband soon after marriage. But, she sports kumgumam, wears flowers. This Valampuri John told on the state, mocking at her saying, a widow should appear to be a widow. This man, who was with dravidian parties and EVR, advocating widow remarriage and attacking a lot of superstitions! He is now your hero!

What is his contribution to Tamil society? To Tamil language and literature? Where are his novels, poems and essays? What is his place in politics other than seeking personal favoru by attaching himself to this or that politician? Has he done any social service? Has he atleast raised his voice for the poor and downtrodden as a Christian, which he was? Nothing.

Why should he be remembhered and commemorated at all? Why should be honored during his life time?

Valampuri John is an excellent example of a person who should be soon forgotten after his death!

போல திரைப்படங்களுக்கு பாடல் எழுதிய ஒரு கவிஞன்..வறுமையில் வாடினான்..கடன் தொல்லை வேறு.அந்த சமயத்தில் ஒரு கட்சியில் சேர்ந்தான்.வளமானான்.அவர் நம்மிடையே
இன்றும் வா ழ்ந்து வருவதால்...அவர் பெயரை நாகரிகம் கருதி சொல்லவில்லை.என்னுடைய ஆதங்கம்..சாதாரண நடிகர்கள் மருத்துவமனையில் சேர்க்கப்பட்டாலே..விரைந்து சென்று
உதவும் அரசியல்வாதிகள்...இவருக்கும் உதவியிருக்கலாமே..ஒருவர் எந்த கட்சியில் இருந்தார்..எப்படிப்பட்டவர் என்று அவருக்கு உதவிதேவைப்படும் போது நினைக்கக்கூடாது.
என்பதுதான்.
